Đerdap lake

Đerdap lake is the artificial lake on Danube, in eastern Serbia, near border with Romania. It was made in 1972. when Yugoslavia and Romania also made hydroelectric power plant Đerdap I.
The lake lies in the Đerdap gorge and there is a National park Đerdap on the shore of lake.



The lake is over 100 kilometers long and it's widest spot is 8 kilometers wide. The maximum depth reaches 100 meters. The lake surface is 253 square kilometers, of which 163 square kilometers on Serbian and 90 square kilometers on Romanian side. It is the fourth lake in Balkans and largest in Serbia. Đerdap gorge is the largest and longest gorge in Europe, consisting of alternating four valleys and four gorges: Golubac gorge, Ljupkovska ravine, gorge "Gospođin vir", Donjomilanovačka ravine, gorge Kazan, Oršavska basin, Sipska gorge, Vlach - Pontic plain.



Đerdap lake can be easily reached from Belgrade, Pančevo, Požarevac, Negotin, Zaječar, as well as from other cities in eastern and central Serbia. Beside lake is a road Golubac - Kladovo. Railroad Belgrade - Bor most approaching the lake near Majdanpek. There is a border crossing to Romania on the Đerdap hydroelectric dam.


Đerdap lake has an exceptional natural wealth and amazingly areas, as well as many cultural and historic monuments. The most interesting part of Đerdap lake is Đerdap gorge, whose landscape is changing at a short distance. There is a medieval fortress Golubački town, in Golubac gorge, which marks the beginning of the Đerdap National park. Several remains of Roman forts and villages also attracts the attention of tourists.
