Sjenica lake

Sjenica lake or also called Uvac lake, is located between the villages Akmačići and Bukovik in the southwestern part of Serbia, in the municipalities of Sjenica and Nova Varoš, between the mountains Zlatar and Javor.

The lake is a result of the sinking of the canyon and damming the river Uvac in 1979 and the construction of a dam near the village Akmačići. The lake was formed by the river Uvac and is assisted by Vapa river, which flows. It is located at an altitude 985m. It is long 25km, with a maximum depth of 108m and the dam is 160m long and 110m high at the surface of 5.7 square kilometers.

Sjenica lake filled the canyon depths up to 100m, which is widely known because of the unique meanders which Uvac carved in limestone massif Pešter plateau. The lake is part of the Special Reserve Uvac, established to protect the largest colony of griffon vulture in the Balkans. The lake is rich in various kind of fish, like carp, chub, salmon, barbel and catfish.
